Commissioner's Corner

Message from Conservation Commissioner Barnett Lawley

Summer is here which means many Alabamians are boating, camping and taking vacations. I would like to suggest you spend your leisure time at an Alabama State Park. Many offer affordable, resort accommodations and summertime recreational activities and are relatively close to home. With the price of gas these days, taking a trip to a nearby state park is more cost effective than traveling out of state.

And while you’re visiting an Alabama State Park, take time to shoot some digital photos to enter in the 2009 Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest. This year we’ve added additional categories to include Students and State Parks. Your winning photo could be published in Outdoor Alabama Magazine and win a prize.

Trying to beat the heat, many of you head to the water for boating and swimming. Please use safe boating and swimming practices and be sure to obey all boating laws. Our Marine Police and Marine Resources officers are out in full force ensuring state waterways remain safe and clean.

While you’re enjoying the outdoors, you may want to think about buying an Alabama Wildlife Heritage License so that summer adventures can continue for future generations. Each $10 contribution to this program is matched with federal money, helping the Department continue to manage lands and sustain wildlife habitats for the enjoyment of all Alabamians and her visitors. You can purchase your license online with a credit card. And, please have a fun and safe summer in Outdoor Alabama.
