Overview
Hunters, bird watchers, and trail riders have much to enjoy across over 38,000 acres of the Lauderdale and Freedom Hills Wildlife Management Area additions.
Birding
The walking trail at Freedom Hills WMA is a stop on the North Alabama Birding Trail. See recent sightings on ebird.
Horseback Riding
Freedom hills has 14.7 miles of horseback riding trails. The four different trails go through the southeast side of the Freedom Hills WMA. Parking is located at 5422 Mount Mills Road, Cherokee AL. Horseback riding trails are not available during hunting season. Additional information is found on the National Recreation Trails website.

Hunting
These tracts of pine and hardwood forest habitats in Lauderdale and Colbert counties serve as public land additions to the Freedom Hills WMA and Lauderdale WMA, which have experienced acreage declines due to loss of leased land. These acquisitions also created and expanded the Riverton Community Hunting Area (CHA).
Hunters must possess a valid hunting license, a WMA license and a free map/permit. Permits and other WMA information may be downloaded from the Wildlife Management Areas webpage.

Directions
Freedom Hills WMA:
From Florence, take US 72 West/ US 43 South across O’Neal Bridge and travel approximately 6 miles, turn right and follow US Hwy 72 West. Travel approximately miles 13.1 to Colbert Co. Rd. 33. Turn left on to Co. Rd. 33 and go approximately 3.9 miles to the parking lot.
Lauderdale WMA:
From Florence, take AL-20 (Savannah Highway) West. Turn left onto Lauderdale Co. Rd. 14. Travel approximately 22 miles to Waterloo. Once you cross the bridge over Second Creek, the check-in station will be on your right.
Riverton CHA:
From Florence, take US 72 West/ US 43 South across O’Neal Bridge and travel approximately 6 miles, turn right and follow US Hwy 72 West. Travel approximately miles 24 miles to Riverton Rose Trail/Colbert Co. Rd. 1. Turn right on Co. Rd. 1 and travel approximately 9.3 miles to the check-in station.
