Overview
Recreational opportunities abound on the Wehle Tract in Bullock County. Visitors to these 1,505 acres of rolling pine hills and hardwood bottoms can camp, fish, hike, horseback ride and observe wildlife. Additionally, canoe usage on Blue Heron Lake is available upon request and hunting opportunities exist on the Barbour Wildlife Management Area portion of the tract.

This purchase involved a discounted sale, whereby the landowner voluntarily sold the tract for 50 percent of the appraised value. In addition to providing public recreation, the Wehle Tract also serves as a nature preserve.

The links below provide more detailed information on the Wehle tract and associated recreational opportunities.

The Wehle Tract is an excellent site for birding. The hiking trail parking lot on Pleasant Hill Road allows access seven days a week to the Forever Wild portion of the tract. View recent bird sightings.

Visitors on open weekends are encouraged to visit the Alligator Lakes Nature Trail, which provide viewing opportunities for birds, alligators, beavers and other wildlife.

Camping
The Wehle Land Conservation Center has 9 campsites with power and water hook-ups (no sewer available).  Campsites are available on scheduled open weekends on a first come, first served basis. Additional spaces are available with no power or water. There is no fee for these campsites.  Gates open at 2 p.m. on Friday with a checkout time of 3 p.m. Sunday (scheduled weekends only). Amenities include horse stalls and paddocks, covered pavilion, showers and restrooms. Upon arrival, check in with the camp host.

Fishing
Fishing is only allowed in the Nature Center Pond, Blue Heron Lake and Wood Duck Lake during open weekends. Limits are 10 bass and 50 bream per person. Horseback Riding
The Pines Trail is the primary horseback trail on the property covering 5.7 miles.  The Bottomland Cutoff Trail is a 1-mile connector trail that allows for shorter loop routes. (PLEASE NOTE;  The Firebreak Trail is no longer maintained due to erosion issues).  The trails are open to horses on open weekends only. Stables, paddocks, and campsites are also available for overnight use on open weekends.  No horses are allowed on main roads except at horse trail crossings. Horses are not allowed on the covered bridge. Stalls should be cleaned before departure. See camp host for cleaning instructions.

Hunting
Hunting is only available on the portion of the Wehle tract that is part of the Barbour County Wildlife Management Area. Please obey property signage that designates the hunting area. Hunters must possess a valid hunting license, a WMA license and a free map/permit. Permits and other WMA information may be downloaded from the Wildlife Management Areas webpage.
